It sounds cheesy, but projects like the Programming Historian don’t exist without people freely giving their time, energy, and passion. Part of our sustainability plan has always been to ensure the project wasn’t reliant upon grant funding, and that means we’ve had to work hard to entice volunteers to sustain our efforts. But as teachers, researchers, and students face unprecedented access to historical material in our “culture of abundance,” computer-assisted analysis of text is an increasingly viable and attractive skill.
